Across our interviews with directors serving on African boards, a pattern of quiet discipline emerges among the most effective: papers circulated five days ahead, meetings that start with decisions rather than updates, and a standing agenda item (“what are we not discussing that we should be?”) that routinely produces the quarter’s most important conversation.
The rituals are teachable, and they matter more as boards confront faster cycles: currency volatility, technology shifts, succession under scrutiny. Governance quality is becoming a pricing factor in African private capital. Directors who master the craft are not just safer fiduciaries; they are more valuable ones.
