Aga Khan University invites applications for the position of House Officer in the Department of Postgraduate Medical Education.

Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for the following:

  • Learn patient-care under the supervision of Residents and Consultants,

  • Perform initial assessment that includes history and physical examination.

  • Order labs / radiology in consultation with supervisor.

  • Perform simple procedures like cannulation, ABG sampling, entheterization, NG tube insertion, gastric lavage etc. under supervision.

  • Order medication like IV fluids, analgesics, antibiotic etc. under supervision.

  • Write medical prescription.

  • Make daily / morning ward rounds with team, collect and interpret data and gain experience in patient care
    management.

  • Perform common procedures (such as I/V lines, Venipuncture, Lumbar puncture etc) with or without supervisor.

  • Discuss the case with supervisor, order necessary investigation and provide necessary medical treatment under supervision.

  • Communicate the findings and plan to the patient and / or family.

  • Keep up to date legible medical records in a timely fashion.

  • Consult subspecialty services and communicate the findings to relevant supervisor specialty, if needed.

  • Discharge patient with verbal and written discharge summary / instructions, fill up necessary discharge document and arrange take home supplies for the patients.

  • Attend all patient’s related issues/matters including patient’s admission, follow up of discharged patients and patient plan for the day.

  • Be available when on call; carry a pager and inform the team and ward personnel of the number, when on-call.

  • To present a patient concisely in a systematic manner, including overnight issues.

  • Coordinate with the case manager (if present) in carrying out of assignments of a particular patient e.g. dressings,

  • Clerk and carry out pre-operative work-up of elective and emergency patients admitted on the floor.

  • Communicate with the floor nurses regarding urgent orders.

  • Regularly communicate/update senior residents/consultants regarding new developments in the condition of patients.

  • Manage post-operative patients and carry out their post-op orders.

  • Daily document the whole day’s plan and patient’s condition in a systematic fashion in patient’s files.

  • Assign tasks regarding patient care to fellow on-call interns at the end of the day.

  • Be an active member of the team in managing the ward patients during the night; document all events during the

  • Respond immediately to all rush calls from the floor, irrespective of the time.

  • Arrange transfer/shift-out of the patient to a different unit or hospital when required.

Requirements:

You should have:

  • MBBS from an institution recognized by PMDC

  • Valid provisional PMDC license

  • Valid BLS certification

  • CNIC / NICOP / Passport (page 1&2)
